Massage

What is Massage?

Massage is manipulation of the muscles and soft tissues of the body to reduce tension, stretch ligaments and tendons to keep them flexible, flush out toxins and promote balance in the body and mind.

There are many different techniques used by our therapists including deep and soft-touch massage; soft tissue release, muscle energy techniques, and neuromuscular and trigger point massage.

Some people are worried that massage therapy can be painful, but you don't need to worry. Our expert therapists will adapt the pressure to your individual need and preference (light, medium or firm).

Massage eases musculoskeletal pain and tension which is particularly effective in relieving general back, neck, shoulder and leg pain, it's also excellent for reducing stress.

Massage has been shown to release endorphins and boost levels of serotonin and dopamine which are your natural feel good hormones and promote relaxation, healing and pain management.

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a type of massage, rather than something reserved only for people who participate in sport. There are lots of different types of massage e.g. Swedish, aromatherapy, relaxing, hot stone e.t.c. and sports massage is the main type of massage at Chiltern Physiotherapy.

Rather than one specific technique, sport massage therapists utilise techniques from all massage disciplines with the goal of reducing pain and enhancing daily function and sports performance.
