When Can I Start?
If you are new to pilates, you can start once you are 12 weeks pregnant. If you
were doing pilates prior to becoming pregnant, you can continue throughout all stages
of pregnancy. It is possible to do pilates throughout your entire pregnancy.

Pregnancy is an amazing time for all women. It is a great time to enjoy focusing on your posture, gentle stretching, toning and relaxing rather than aiming to “get fit” through rigorous exercise.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology recommend exercising at least 2 times a week for approximately 30 minutes each time.
You do not need to have done Pilates before. Complete beginners welcome.
General pilates classes are not really suitable for pregnant women due to the physical changes that occur during pregnancy. All of our classes are taught by physiotherapists who are specifically trained to teach ante and post natal pilates.
Unlike general pilates instructors, physiotherapists have an extensive medical knowledge which enable us to teach the most appropriate exercise for your stage of pregnancy, especially if you are experiencing any of the common difficulties with pregnancy such as back pain, joint pain, poor posture, muscle spasm/fatigue, and/or symphysis pubis discomfort.
You can be reassured that you can exercise safely during (and after) your pregnancy under the guidance of a physiotherapist.
During pregnancy your body undergoes many changes in a short period of time. These hormonal changes act to soften the muscles and ligaments of the pelvis to allow room for the baby to grow. These effects must be take into consideration when exercising.
Pilates is a toning and conditioning exercise programme that concentrates on building a strong and efficient ‘centre’ of abdominal, spinal and pelvic floor muscles which act to brace the spine to support the extra weight of the baby and provide stability to the joints. A strong and efficient pelvic floor provides continuous support to the uterus and helps reduce weakening and stretching of the pelvic floor during and after pregnancy.
Keeping the pelvic floor muscles strong during pregnancy and learning how to contract and relax them may help to reduce the damage to them during labour. Toning up your pelvic floor muscles after the birth is important to avoid leakage from your bladder or bowel. In the longer term, pelvic floor exercises can safeguard against incontinence, haemorrhoids or prolapse of the pelvic organs.
